| SALEM — Carl N. Mootafian, 99, of Salem, died Saturday, April 4,
2009 in Salem. He was the husband of Frances (Kessenger) Mootafian of
Salem.
Born in Turkey in 1909, the son of the late Nishan and
Shoghagat (Chorbacian) Mootafian, Carl and his brothers and sister
survived the Armenian Genocide in Turkey and were moved to Corfu,
Greece where they lived for a while in an orphanage. After moving to
the United States, Carl's sister, Haigouhie and her husband sent for
the boys and moved them to the United States to live in Salem. Carl
owned and operated the former Carl's Barbershop on Boston St., Salem
and later, in his 80s and 90s worked at Al's Barber Shop. Mr. Mootafian
was also a proud U.S. Navy Veteran who served during World War II.
An
artistic man, Carl enjoyed painting, carpentry and he loved to sing. He
was the "Singing Barber" on WESX radio years ago and was made an
honorary member of the Salem AOH where he would go to sing Irish Songs.
Carl also had the honor of cutting President Kennedy's hair once at his
shop on Boston Street.
He is survived by his wife, Frances
Mootafian of Salem; a nephew, Nishan Mootafian and nieces, Mary
Bonefant of Salem, Nadia Masse of Florida, and Aghavne and Shoghagat of
Turkey and great-nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister,
Haigouhie Chicknavorian, and his brothers, Harry and Dickram Mootafian.
ARRANGEMENTS:
A graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery, Wednesday at 2
p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to meet at the corner gate of
the cemetery at 1:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to
Holy Trinity Armenian Church, 145 Brattle St., Cambridge, MA 02138 or
to AGBU Organization, 247 Mt. Auburn St., Watertown, MA 02472.
