Family Owned for Over 65 Years

Marblehead-

Marjorie M. (Powers) Girard, 93, died Thursday, August 18, 2011 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House after a short illness. She was the former wife of the late George E. Girard, Chief of Police, Ret., of Marblehead.

A true Marbleheader, she was born at home in Marblehead on July 26, 1918. Her parents were the late William H. and Gertrude M. (Snow) Powers. After graduation from Marblehead High School in 1936, Marjorie went to work as a telephone operator at New England Telephone. She was later employed by the Charles H. Slee Insurance Agency for over twenty-eight years until her retirement in 1987.

Marge lived an active and fulfilling life. She loved to travel with her friends and over the years visited many countries. Her favorite destination was Hawaii. An avid golfer, she was a member of the Ladies League at the Middleton Golf Club. She was a whiz at cribbage and played regularly at the Marblehead Senior Center, and was also an avid and sometimes frustrated fan of the Red Sox.

Marge will be lovingly remembered for having an infectious sense of humor, quick to laugh, quick to make a joke, always good natured with an optimistic outlook on life. She often commented that she had had a good life. She was always a joy to be around.

Mrs. Girard is survived by three children, Marjorie Orne and her husband Frank of Marblehead, George E. Girard and his wife Galina of Fort Collins, CO, and Richard E. Girard and his wife Gloria of Montgomery, TX, eight grandchildren; Stephen Orne, Kristin Dean, Sarah Herring, Michael Girard, Jennifer Widler, Richard Girard, Amy Webb, and Robert Girard, and several nieces and nephews. She was also the proud great-grandmother of twelve.

A private graveside service will be held in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. Arrangements are through the Berube and Sons Funeral Home of Salem.
