Marjorie M.
(Powers) Girard, 93, died Thursday, August 18, 2011 at the Kaplan
Family Hospice House after a short illness. She was the former wife
of the late George E. Girard, Chief of Police, Ret., of Marblehead.
A true
Marbleheader, she was born at home in Marblehead on July 26, 1918.
Her parents were the late William H. and Gertrude M. (Snow) Powers.
After graduation from Marblehead High School in 1936, Marjorie went
to work as a telephone operator at New England Telephone. She was
later employed by the Charles H. Slee Insurance Agency for over
twenty-eight years until her retirement in 1987.
Marge lived an
active and fulfilling life. She loved to travel with her friends and
over the years visited many countries. Her favorite destination was
Hawaii. An avid golfer, she was a member of the Ladies League at the
Middleton Golf Club. She was a whiz at cribbage and played regularly
at the Marblehead Senior Center, and was also an avid and sometimes
frustrated fan of the Red Sox.
Marge will be
lovingly remembered for having an infectious sense of humor, quick to
laugh, quick to make a joke, always good natured with an optimistic
outlook on life. She often commented that she had had a good life.
She was always a joy to be around.
Mrs. Girard is
survived by three children, Marjorie Orne and her husband Frank of
Marblehead, George E. Girard and his wife Galina of Fort Collins, CO,
and Richard E. Girard and his wife Gloria of Montgomery, TX, eight
grandchildren; Stephen Orne, Kristin Dean, Sarah Herring, Michael
Girard, Jennifer Widler, Richard Girard, Amy Webb, and Robert Girard,
and several nieces and nephews. She was also the proud
great-grandmother of twelve.
A private graveside service
will be held in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. Arrangements are
through the Berube and Sons Funeral Home of Salem.
