Velia 'Val' (Artigiani) Sturgis, 101, of Newburyport and longtime resident of Marblehead, died July 25, 2009 in Newburyport.She was the wife of the late Dr. Edwin
Sturgis D.M.D. of Marblehead.
Born in Baltimore,
MD, January 27, 1908, Velia
was a grammar school teacher for years before moving to Marblehead in 1932.Mrs. Sturgis was a member of the Marblehead
Historical Society.She enjoyed
gardening and was an avid reader.Her
real loves were her grand and great-grandchildren, the lights of her life.
Velia is survived by a daughter, Pamela Sturgis
Hopewell of Yarmouth, ME, two grandchildren; Hillary Jackson of Camden, ME, and
BlakeLee Greene of Newburyport, MA, seven great-grandchildren; Robert, Eliza,
Steven, and Katharine Derrey, and Benjamin, Peter, and Thomas Greene, and two
sons-in-law; Taylor Greene of Newburyport, and Tom Jackson of Camden, ME.Val was also the mother of the late Susan A.
Sturgis who passed in 1991.
