William A. Clarke, 87, of Nahant, died Thursday in the VA Hospital in West Roxbury. He was the husband of the late Madeline A. (Letarte) Clarke and the son of the late Andrew and Pearl (Taylor) Clarke.


William attended school in Lynn and was a graduate of Lynn English High School. A U.S. Army veteran, William served during WWII in the 5th and 7th Army in the North African Campaign. He attended MIT in Boston and Wentworth Institute and was a registered professional engineer. Mr. Clarke worked for a time with Coca Cola in Lynn, Boston Schools, Lynn Hospital and North Shore Electrical Co. of Lynn, and worked for 24 years as a facility planner for the GE River Works aircraft department. William lived in Nahant before moving to the Soldier's Home in Chelsea where he lived for five years.


Mr. Clarke was a member of the Nahant Historical Society and the Essex County Greenbelt Association. He was a life member of the Andover Sportsmen's Club, an honorary member of Danvers Fish and Game, a life member of DAV Post 64 and a life member of Post 240 VFW. William was an avid yachtsman and was a life member of Lynn Yacht Club.


He is survived by two sons; William A. and his wife Joan, of Georgetown, and John L. and his wife Beverly of Lynn, two granddaughters; Maureen and Elizabeth, two step-grandsons; David and Daniel and three great-grandsons; Brian, Dillon, and Parker, and several nieces and nephews. William was the brother of the late Virginia Baker, Muriel Clarke Shain, and Richard Clarke.


Relatives and friends are invited to visitation in the Berube and Sons Funeral Home, 191 Lafayette St. (Rt.1A/114) Salem, Tuesday from 3-7 pm. A graveside service will be held in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Nahant Wednesday at 10 am. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in William's name to American Cancer Society, PO Box 9376, Framingham, MA 01701 or through www.Cancer.org
